Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay System This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Players are granted the ability to question specific decisions from the official, following the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step arrives only a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no limit on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
