It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.
New Release Strategy
From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more material, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, producers end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.
Learning from Past Breaks
The One Piece anime previously took a six-month break that started in late 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the visuals and let the manga to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although some recap episodes sprouted up during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the action. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with some instead handling more material or more to make up for time.
It's the end of a generation for anime, as One Piece is the final major title to abandon the traditional method of creation, which focused on airing for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Today, series creation is structured in cours, with one or two at most releasing each year, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the source material.
