European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and European institutions.
